Empower Clients

Almost 40 years ago, Stephen Karpman, M.D., developed his “drama triangle” – victim, rescuer, persecutor. To shift the client into a forward behavior change, we get to develop solutions that empower and transform.

Here is an example: A person cannot find a solution so they complete an application. The nonprofit provides resources. Next month, same person requests more resources, nonprofit says that support was already provided. The person feels that the community is not helping them. The nonprofit fills that the person is not making changes. This is a short term solution.

Do you see the victim, rescuer, and persecutor in the example? To break this cycle, we get to step forward into responsibility as a community. An article was published about an investment firm that wanted better tenants so they created a program to move renters into home owners. This is an example of being responsible.

As a group, we get to find a long term solution that moves the applicant, nonprofit, and community forward.

Scenario 1: First time request for financial aid

Scenario 2: Second time request for financial aid from last month

Scneario 3: Second time request from 10 months ago

Example of a solution or starting point to come to a solution ....

Scenario 1: We have just started a new program for those requesting financial aid. You will receive financial aid and we strongly encourage you to take the resource workshop and have a monthly accountability person. If you find your self in need of financial aid in the next few months and are able to show consistent progression of behavious changes, then your request for financial aid will be assessed for consideration.

Scenario 2: If you have not completed the suggested program, we are providing a second chance. By completing the resource workshop and excercises, have a monthly accountability person for 60 days, and get a positive recommendation from the accountability partner, then your request for financial aid will be assessed for consideration.

Scenario 3: We have a new program that was not available with your last request. By completing the resource workshop and excercise, have a monthly accountability person for 60 days, and have recommendation from the accountability partner, then your request for financial aid will be assessed for consideration.

For discussion at next Steering Committee Meeting.
